“Saying goodbye isn’t as hard as what we are leaving behind”

I have never really had a “way with words”. Those that know me would say I can get tongue tied. I do feel a great need to try and get some words out for and to my team.

As I sit here listening to the team giggling upstairs I can see their smiles and feel their happiness.  There faces are forever engraved in my head.  Jackie’s beautiful voice and her song fills the air.  I feel a great loss in my belly and heart for I have to say goodbye to these wonderful people. The tears are filling my eyes.

In one week these people have become my family.  They have taught me so much about love, faith and God.  I am grateful that this group was brought together to do some great work together.  They have hugged me when I was sad, laughed with me, prayed with me, listened to me, cared for me and shared their heart.  We supported each other every step of the way. Our special gifts and strengths all just complimented each other.  Our work in Haiti is not finished, but I know that this team has accomplished a great deal.  We didn’t just bring food and water, or hugs and happiness but a belief in the goodness of the people of Haiti. And that is what is needed if life here is ever going to change.

How lucky I am to have met people that are so hard to say goodbye to.

Till we meet again..I thank you my friends!

A beautiful face of Haiti.

The special people we shall never forget!

The support we received while in Haiti was amazing.  We all felt safe, well protected and cared for. We were fortunate enough to have drivers and translators that made this possible.  Many of you know that Haiti is not a very safe place for Americans but at no time did I feel unsafe.  This was all because of the care we were provided by Makinele and Lolo, our drivers and our interpretors Jonas and Sandro.  We filled baskets at the market with food for them to take back home and they couldn’t have been more thankful.

We feel blessed to be able to get to know Jonas and Sandro very well.

Jonas is 20 and supports his mother and brothers. Their home was destroyed during the earthquake and he does his best to help American’s with the language for $20 a day. He lives in a tent where his house once stood.  He is trying to get his younger brother into the taxi business to help support the family. He was involved in every aspect of our journey not only translating but helping the kids and teaching these children about love and faith.

Sandro is 17 years old and has taught himself english, spanish and is working on german.  That’s in addition to creole and french.  He asked me if there was any way I could get him another german book, mandarin and porteugese.  I will do my best to make his wish for the books come true.  He lives in a tent camp and says that it is a very unsafe place.  At such a young age, this boy was so mature and has experienced so much already. I thought about the students I know that are 17, could they handle all he has been through? I am not sure.  My wish for him is that his spirit never becomes broken, that his faith in something more continues and that his life continues to grow in a positive way.

Our Wonderful Hosts, Melissa and Ryan, read this quote at dinner tonight for our team.

“Let us not be satisfied with just giving money.  Money is not enough, money Can be alot but they need your hearts to love them.  So spread your love everywhere you go.” … Mother Teresa
